In this video I'm performing the gospel blues song John The Revelator on my old Windsor Banjo. I'm not a banjo player so please forgive me if you are but they're just so much fun to play! The tuning I'm using is double C tuning - GCGCD.
I first heard this song from one of Son House's recordings, he had nothing but his hands clapping the beat to accompany him and it's just so powerful. I really recommend giving it a listen!
These Windsor banjo's were made in Birmingham in England, not sure the date exactly of this one but it seems pretty old to me. It was one of their premium banjos at the time.
The mic is a NoHype Audio LRM-V Ribbon Microphone going through an old Symetrix preamp and then into a Lexicon MX200 unit for a little reverb. No EQ or post processing was used.
In the 16th century, banjo strings were made from animal intestine, these are synthetic Gut strings designed to sound like the real thing. It gives the banjo a nice mellow sound which sounds nice with this low tuning.
