the binding of isaac: rebirth is a 2014 roguelike action-adventure game designed by edmund mcmillen and developed by nicalis. rebirth is a remake of the adobe flash application known as the binding of isaac, also developed by mcmillen as well as florian himsl in 2011. since the release of rebirth, there have been four expansions: afterbirth (2015), afterbirth+ (2017), repentance (2021) and repentance+ (2024), each expansion adding more game content and gameplay modes.
similar to the original the binding of isaac, the plot is loosely based on the biblical story of the same name. the player takes control of isaac, a young boy whose mother, convinced that she is hearing the voice of god and must follow his instruction, strips him of his possessions and locks him in his bedroom. when isaac's mother is about to kill him on god's supposed orders, isaac escapes to the basement through a trapdoor and fights through randomly-generated roguelike dungeons before eventually confronting his mother. the player fights against various monsters, using isaac's tears to attack them, and collects items that will modify his stats and abilities, potentially creating many powerful or interesting synergies.
