π₯ Watch out radical idea upcoming.
Now THIS is a hashtag#cool slice of computing β#KolibriOS. Written entirely in assembly, watch it boot (on a VM) in 0.5 seconds, comes with select graphics and NIC drivers, and feels like#RiscOS on an hashtag#Acorn β insanely snappy.
This is the mindset we need to revive: well-crafted, tiny (virtual) desktop OSes and snappy apps. Not necessarily assembly-tiny, but fast, lean, responsive.
Forget the#Web,#Windows bloatedness and yes even #Linux starts to get a middle aged belly and love handles β of for server OS and apps that's not an issue but desktop apps need to be lean and react instantly. We expect that from games that are incredibly complex so why not from browsers, and our crappy office applications? After all, we have supercomputers in our pockets and offices, yet everything feels like a sluggish 386/486 with a fancy skin.
This little gem? Itβs insane fun to click around in and code a few simple assembly programs that actually creates a GUI. Lightning-fast, tight, elegant β exactly what computing should feel like. And memory usage: I managed to consume a whopping 88MB :D
π‘ Now Imagine this: a cross platform runtime environment like KolibriOS β lean, lightning-fast, minimal overhead with good simple UI library. And on top of that, you write your desktop applications, in a low-level yet easy to use language for this runtime. Think #WASM, but one than actually used and free from browser. And we finally again have consistent UIs, buttery-smooth performance, snappy user experience, efficient memory usage and just as simple to code β once youβve got a few solid libraries to target the virtual OS.
Itβs the kind of software ecosystem that actually makes computers feel alive again, not like running a supercomputer through a 486-era interface. Yet be simple enough to make feature rich GUI apps that are efficient.
