Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is an action-strategy game viewed from a third-person angle, incorporating elements from real-time strategy and tower defense genres. In the game, the player controls Soh, who is responsible for safeguarding a divine maiden named Yoshiro. Yoshiro's mission is to purify and cleanse villages of corruption and restore peace to the legendary Mt. Kafuku.
The gameplay is split into two distinct phases. During the day, Soh explores the village, rescues villagers, and sets up various devices. At night, malevolent spirits known as the Seethe invade from Torii gates, and the player must work with the rescued villagers to protect Yoshiro from attacks until dawn. Players can strategically position villagers and assign them different roles. For example, a woodcutter is a strong melee fighter, while an archer offers ranged support. Additionally, players can equip Soh and the villagers with one of twelve masks that bestow divine powers. The positions and roles of the villagers can be adjusted during combat. If Soh sustains severe injuries, they will enter Spirit mode, allowing them to continue commanding other villagers.
