I was told I needed an exorcism for my standard seasonal depression. I had NO symptoms of possession, obsession, or oppression but suddenly I was being pressured into believing I had depression because of demons and the only way to get rid of it was through contacting an exorcist and getting...an exorcism.
At this point, I realized this person had no idea what they were actually talking about and I need to disregard their advice BUT there are SO many people who are vulnerable and looking for a quick 'fix' to their mental illness and think that they do need an exorcism or that demons are the cause of their mental illness. Let me be clear, demons can make a mental illness WORSE but they are not the cause of a mental illness. So yes, pray. Yes, go to Confession. Yes, recieve the Sacraments and go to Mass...but also get professional help if you need it.
Mental illness is more complicated than just praying it away or getting...an exorcism. Plus, Confession is more efficacious than most exorcisms. A lot of the time you just need some professional help.
Does that mean we stay in therapy for YEARS and years and years? Hopefully not! It's a tool that should help us be able to get back on our feet and give us methods to cope in healthy manners, we shouldn't be in therapy for 5+ years. We should be able to heal and move on. But anyways, yeah ._. I was told this and I was genuinely shocked.
