Years ago, Hal Jordan is chosen as the successor of Green Lantern Abin Sur after he crashes his ship and dies. In 2016, Hal and John Stewart have a mentor-mentee relationship and travel to Rushville, Nebraska after John receives a cryptic message from a holographic projection of Hal's younger consciousness within his ring. John helps Sheriff Kerry Kane capture a suspect involved in a mass shooting, but Kerry forbids Hal from joining the investigation, believing the case has no extraterrestrial connection. Hal gets himself arrested for a bar fight and is bailed out by lawyer and Kerry's husband Billy Macon. In return, he agrees to meet Kerry's father-in-law William, who arranges for Hal to interrogate the suspect, Waylon Sanders. During the interrogation, Hal exposes Sanders as an alien; Sanders detonates a bomb in his body but Hal uses the last of his ring's power to contain the damage. In 2026, John returns to Rushville, where Kerry shows him a dead and frozen Hal who is also missing his ring.
