I've been experimenting a little with ChatGPT - a language algorithm you can chat to. I thought it might be interesting to have it design a cake recipe, in the style of William Shakespeare... It nearly worked. I had to help a bit.

Here's the 'poetic' recipe:

With eggs and sugar, in a bowl combine,
And melted butter, for a texture fine.
Sift in the flour and baking powder too,
Then stir in milk to make the batter new.

Vanilla extract, flavor, doth impart,
And pour the batter in a pan, depart.
To oven's heat, the pan doth go with haste,
To bake until the sponge doth golden taste.

When done, remove the pan with care and grace,
And let it cool before you smear its face
With jelly or with cream, as please thee most,
Then cut and serve the sponge, your guests to boast.

So, let this recipe be made with care,
A sponge cake, that shall be lov-ed and fair.

Here's what I actually made. The order of mixing is a little unconventional to me, but it worked very well:
Beat 3 medium eggs together with 160g caster sugar
When thoroughly mixed, beat in 170g melted butter (warm, not hot - adding a little at a time to make it easier to mix)
Add 2 heaped teaspoons baking powder to 180g plain flour and sift into the mix - stir until uniformly mixed
Mix in a little milk if necessary, until the batter is just loose enough to drop from a spoon
Mix in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Transfer to 2 round sponge tins - lined on the bottom with circles of greaseproof paper or baking parchment

Bake at 180C 350F Gas Mark 4 until risen and golden, and a toothpick poked into the middle comes out completely clean; mine took only about 30 minutes, but it may take longer depending on your oven

Allow to cool a little before turning out onto a wire rack to cool further - remove the parchment from the bottoms of the two halves and spread jam (I used blackcurrant) on one of them, then assemble the sandwich and dust with a little icing sugar.
