Every few years I’m an instructor at a songwriting camp in northern Michigan. The guy who runs it writes detailed song prompts for everyone and this is the second song I’ve written at the camp (the first was From Philip Roth at Gmail to R Zimmerman at AOL dot com, opening track from my 2018 album The Old Guys). The prompt for Bricks was about DIY and a breakup and in three minutes it helped me channel some actual long-buried trauma into a revenge fantasy. I love writing songs! Eric and I had a blast recording this.
