In the 1990s, Amtrak attempted to overcome a major logistical headache it had inherited upon its formation with the need for trains to be routed via the terminal stations of Chicago, a situation that had negated the ability for the operator to run direct services coast-to-coast from destinations such as New York, Boston and Washington to Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
In response, the company briefly flirted with the notion of allowing passengers to stay aboard diagrammed long-distance trains which would continue beyond Chicago, and while the theory had promise, the execution revealed logistical and financial nightmares that could not be overcome with ease, and thus the entire concept was wrapped up before it was ever adopted by the mainstream network.
