De Wallen (meaning "the walls") is Amsterdam's oldest neighborhood and the core of the city's medieval center. The walk begins at Centraal Station, follows Zeedijk โ one of Amsterdam's earliest streets dating back to the 14th-century sea dike โ through the illuminated canals and nightlife of the Red Light District, and ends at the Oude Kerk, founded around 1213 and consecrated in 1306 as Amsterdam's first parish church.

โโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
The Oude Kerk is Amsterdam's oldest surviving building. Founded around 1213 as a wooden chapel, it was consecrated in 1306 by the Bishop of Utrecht and dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. Its wooden vault ceiling, built around 1390 from Estonian oak, is the largest medieval wooden vault in Europe. The floor is paved with roughly 2,500 gravestones beneath which approximately 60,000 Amsterdam citizens are buried, including Saskia van Uylenburgh โ Rembrandt's wife โ who was laid to rest here in 1642. The church became Calvinist after the Dutch Reformation of 1578 and remains an active parish today, sitting quietly at the center of De Wallen as both a place of worship and contemporary art venue.
