On July 28, 2002, nine coal miners were trapped 240 feet underground after accidentally breaking into an abandoned, flooded mine in Quecreek, Pennsylvania.
Millions of gallons of water rushed into the tunnels, leaving the miners stranded in a small air pocket with freezing water rising around them. Believing they might not survive, some prepared final messages for their families while rescue crews raced against time above ground.
After more than 77 hours underground, rescuers drilled a narrow shaft through solid rock and lowered a steel rescue capsule into the mine. One by one, all nine miners were brought safely back to the surface.
The Quecreek Mine Rescue became one of the greatest rescue stories in American history and demonstrated extraordinary courage, determination, and teamwork in the face of overwhelming odds.
