Born in Ithaca, New York, Lucy Isabelle Marsh began singing in choirs, and travelled to Paris to study under Trabadello and Baldelli, returning to the United States to study further with John Walter Hall, soon making her only appearance on an operatic stage as the Flower Maiden in Wagner's Parsifal during the Met's 1904-1905 season. She was lead soprano for New York City's Madison Avenue Reformed Church and the Temple Bethel, and into the 1930s performed for audiences, but Marsh is an example of a trained singer who became known because of her recordings. In 1907 and 1908 she recorded three sides for Columbia, moving to Victor in 1909, appearing prolifically on this label's Black, Blue, Purple, and Red Seal discs (oratorio, sacred, opera, popular, Broadway). She and other artists are uncredited in ensemble work (Victor Light Opera Company, Victor Opera Company, Trinitiy Choir). From 1927-1936 she recorded children's records for Victor as Anna Howard.
