It's been a rough couple of years since the pandemic started. I mean all the way back in 2019, everything was in stock, in production, and at the price it was advertised. Once 2020 rolled around, everything was kind of the same. I say this because people had either bought the GPUs they wanted or were waiting for new stuff to come around. This brings us to late 2020.
The RTX 3000 series started to get teased in the middle of the year and once the release dates came up… Yeah… They were barely available. And that scarcity started to drive the prices up.. And pretty fast at that. With the tariff exemptions expiring and the chip shortage in full effect,
The RTX 3080’s MSRP of 699 was nowhere to be found. These cards already started going for 900$ and up. I mean I bought my RTX 3060 for 599 Canadian which is about 475 USD. around 45% above MSRP. And that apparently is considered an amazing deal these days.
AMD’s offerings were even worse. Not just because of the price but because they were virtually unobtainable. We called both AMD and Nvidia releases, paper launches. Then miners and scalpers got ahold of pretty much all the stock and that drove the prices even further. The RTX 3060 for example was selling for at least double the MSRP. And now, the value of the GPUs in the market is pretty much borked. A 5.. Almost 6-year-old RX 480 is still selling for 50% above MSRP At least.
