Despite all the explicit revelations that have come out from the end of Heard and Depp's marriage, lawsuit and trial, this case is legally entirely about what was said in that Washington op-ed. If you haven't read the thing, its headline said, "I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture's wrath. That has to change."
The article basically talked about Heard accusing Depp of abusing her without mentioning his name. At the time, the Me-too moment was at its peak, which resulted in the article getting attention from all over the world. A series of suing and counter-suing led to both sides throwing hate at each other. The case is worth $150 million. The trial recently started in April 2022, with Depp's side making his case first for the initial few weeks.
Some of the allegations brought forward in the trial have been heard before, during a 16-day trial in the U.K. in 2020. Depp sued The Sun's publisher for libel over a headline calling him a "wife-beater." Heard testified in the trial, making 14 allegations of abuse against Depp. Depp denied all of them, but a judge ruled that 12 had been "proved to the civil standard and that The Sun's headline was "substantially true." When he lost the case, it was the lowest point in Depp's life.
