Join us for a fascinating and insightful discussion about Amazon+10, a Brazilian initiative with the mission of enhancing regional science and technology and advancing innovative solutions to promote a transition to a more sustainable development model in the Amazon. The initiative positively impacts the Amazon region, funding projects and research in the Amazon and coordinating community-based sustainable development opportunities, such as valorizing the standing forest and developing supply chains for products derived from cacao, Brazil nuts, and acai.
Dr. Antoinette WinklerPrins is Deputy Division Director of the Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences, National Science Foundation. She is the former Director of the Environmental Science and Policy Program at Johns Hopkins University, Advanced Academic Programs. She is a human-environment geographer specializing in nature-society relations, with an emphasis on cultural landscapes and environmental knowledge systems, especially in the Brazilian Amazon. She received her BA in (urban) geography in 1983 from the University of Michigan and a Master’s of Urban Planning (MUP) with an emphasis on international development in 1985 from the same university. She completed a PhD in geography from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1999, with a minor in soil science. She completed a postdoc in soil science at the ITC- Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (now part of the University of Twente) in The Netherlands.
Dr. Rafael Andery is the Executive Secretary of the Amazon+10 Initiative. He previously served as Deputy Secretary of Science, Technology, and Innovation for the State of São Paulo (2019-2022) and as Special Advisor for Science, Technology, and Innovation, as well as Higher Education, in the Secretariat of Economic Development of the State of São Paulo (2018-2019). Andery graduated in Law (University of São Paulo, 2012) with a Master's in International Relations (University of São Paulo, 2019). He has experience in law, communication, and public management, with a focus on scientific and technological policies.

The Sustainable Solutions Speaker Series is presented by the Environmental Sciences and Policy and the Energy Policy and Climate programs at Johns Hopkins University. Each talk features scholars and practitioners working to tackle ‘wicked’ environmental, energy, and climate problems. Speakers take us through how they leverage technology, policy, the private sector, markets, research, and field work to form innovative and lasting solutions.
