There is no animal closer to a dog than the turkey–and yet few will mourn the 46 million slaughtered this Thanksgiving. Turkeys will sit in your lap and beg you for belly scratches.
But this is just one of many amazing things about the common turkey.
For example, did you know that wild turkeys can fly? Unlike their domesticated cousins, who have been selectively bred to grow massive breasts, turkeys in the wild can fly up to 50 mph.
They also can speak, with over 20 distinct vocalizations, including a happy purr that’s similar to a cat’s.
But the most remarkable thing about the turkey is something they share with all sentient beings, including humans. They can feel. And at sanctuaries across the nation, we are celebrating Thanksgiving by making friends with turkeys, not eating them. #Thanksgiving #Turkey
