Sarah Smith went in for a routine anatomy scan during her pregnancy at 20 weeks, but learned that her son, Levi, was diagnosed with a lower urinary tract obstruction that left her with an impossible choice: to terminate the pregnancy or carry him to term, knowing he wouldn’t survive more than minutes after delivery. Faced with a devastating prognosis, the couple discovered an innovative Renal Anhydramnios Fetal Therapy (RAFT) study at Johns Hopkins, which offered amnioinfusions to help Levi develop the lungs he needed to survive. The trial gave Sarah and her husband, Zack, hope and more importantly it gave them Levi. None of this would have been possible without research funding that made this all possible.
