Today I’m sharing one of the most meaningful through-the-mail (TTM) autograph returns I’ve ever received.
After finally deciding to send two photos to former Negro League and Major League Baseball player Bill Greason, I honestly had no idea if I’d ever see them again. Just a couple of weeks later, they arrived safely back in my mailbox—beautifully signed.
One photo honors Bill Greason’s service as a United States Marine during World War II and his participation in the Battle of Iwo Jima. The other celebrates his baseball career with the legendary Birmingham Black Barons and his journey to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1954.
But Bill Greason’s story goes far beyond baseball. He broke barriers as one of the first African Americans to serve in the U.S. Marines after integration, played in the Negro Leagues, reached the Major Leagues, and faithfully served as a pastor in Birmingham for more than five decades. His life is a remarkable testimony of courage, faith, humility, and perseverance.
I’m incredibly honored to have these signed photographs in my collection, and I hope this video helps preserve and celebrate the legacy of a true American hero.
