I turned 30, had five weeks out of the pool, and hadn’t swum a personal best in years. This video follows my return to racing to find out whether I’m now too old to set a PB in competitive swimming.
After the end of the swim season and a holiday away from the pool, an easy swim unexpectedly turned into a last-minute race entry. With personal bests in the 100 and 200 metre backstroke dating back to 2016 and 2012, this meet became a genuine test of whether improvement is still possible at 30.
The video builds toward race day, exploring the mental side of ageing in sport, managing expectations, and answering the question many athletes eventually face: are you ever too old to set a personal best?
