The song has been a crossover hit, charting in both the country and western and pop categories.
Brenda Lee released a version in 1972. Probably the most popular version was by Elvis Presley in 1972; Whilst Willie Nelson's Grammy Award-winning version followed in 1982; and the Pet Shop Boys in 1987.
It remains today a classic country/pop music giant in recorded music history.
