July 19, 1997 was a historic day in Always Elvis Fan Club history.
The fan club had done many wonderful tribute events over the years but for the 20th anniversary of Elvis passing we officially did our first convention and concert that included Elvis' original back up group the Jordanaires with lead vocals from Jimmy Ellis (Orion) who had recorded on the Sun Label with Shelby Singleton. The event benefited our local charity Dream Come True.
I had never produced an event of this caliber before but it is an experience I will never forget. The day would begin with a convention that brought Elvis collectors from all around the east coast U.S. and Canada.
On a personal level the event brought many connections in the Elvis community. Robert Klein (TCB Photos), Phil Gelormine and Dave Wolven (Elvis World), Bill Baker and many more attended the event that from that point forward brought lifelong friendships.
That afternoon I had an opportunity to interview the Jordanaires and Jimmy Ellis about their careers and time with Elvis. In addition, fans were able to ask questions directly as well.
The evening concert auditorium was filled to capacity as 'Orion' and the Jordanaires paid tribute to Elvis performing songs throughout Elvis career.
The Jordanaires and Orion even signed autographs on conclusion of the concert.
