Bassist Liany Mateo, featured in Downbeat’s “25 for the Future,” reflects on her journey from attending Summer Jazz Academy in 2016 to earning the bass award at the inaugural Collegiate Jazz Competition in 2020. She has since performed on Jazz at Lincoln Center’s stages with Herlin Riley and Catherine Russell, toured with Luther S. Allison part of Jazz at Lincoln Center Presents New Orleans Songbook, and can be heard on Arturo O’Farrill’s album Legacies.
