This is one that's been on the backburner for a while now. Last year, I promised Alt that I would cover this track once I finished up more Plutonia stuff, and now here we are!
I wound up tweaking and changing some things from the original MIDI. I threw in a lot of toms here and there to sound more epic, and also tweaked the crash cymbals a bit in some places.
The original had the guitars only playing the root notes and the octave together. On a whim, I decided to record another rhythm part to stick down the center of the mix. This new part is basically playing the fifths, to complete the power-chord.
Also got some new DAR-scream samples from a test/personal cover that I did here like a month or so ago. Think it made for a good brutal fit for this track!
I also had fun goofing around a little with my synths here. My bass got to sit this one out as I opted for using a bass synth to handle the low-end.
I changed up the last bit of the song and had decided to noodle around a bit instead. After noodling, I also recorded a harmony part to go along with these new leads.
As for interesting stuff mix-wise, I messed around with my Drum reverb send/aux track. Quite like the way I got the drums to sound in here!
Had a good feeling that this one would be an absolute banger when Alt had sent it my way. It reminded me a lot of Evilution's "Smells Like Burning Corpse". That and this also scratches the RED PLANET itch that I've been having for a long time now. Red Planet is gonna be great whenever I can finally get around to producing new songs for it again!
Also, fun fact, all the guitar parts were recorded with the new 7-string! Judging from this cover, I'd say this wonderful new addition to my toolset can certainly hold its own in a mix!

Shoutout and thanks goes out to Count Vibe, for requesting this one! I was going to save doing this until whenever the Bloodborne remake releases. However, as time went on, I really wanted to squeeze this into the Subscriber Appreciation Event.
When this had first been requested, I had some ideas floating in my head. After several months though, my brain had to free up space for all the other stuff I worked on before this. So, when I finally sat down to tackle this, I had no idea where I was going to go with this one.
I wanted to try and maintain the buildup the original had, but I couldnt really get things to translate over to the guitars like that. Not wanting to give up on this request, I powered on and just decided to fully embrace the heavy metal within m/!... Just needed a few days for my mind to switch back to metal-mode.
Eventually, I came up with the riff that the rhythm guitar is playing. Then from there, I recorded the leads, and also threw in some tremolo picking for good measure. Trem picking and double-kicks are always a wonderful combo for instant metal. Also, I always have a fun time whenever I get to do my bends. Doing the faster, somewhat flashier bits was fun too. After following the originals melody, I just pretty much jammed out!
I also quite enjoyed doing the bass parts here too. I think this is also probably the first time in a while where I actually had the bass tuned a half or whole-step higher than the rhythm and lead guitar (which were in Drop B).
Something I decided to try doing differently was how I approached the drums. When placing the notes, I tried to have things not be 100% snapped to the grid.
On the topic of drums, but not just limited to them, I also swapped out one of my compressor plugins. Tweaked some things around, and I quite like how the drums came out in this. I also wound up trying it out on the lead guitar track/bus too.
I didnt want to completely go full metal and guitars over here, so I threw in some choirs, brass, and string sections too.
Lastly, I wanted to change up things a little bit during the mastering process. Tweaked around my compressors, EQ, and saturator a bit. Overall, Im real happy about how this one turned out. Also pretty happy with how the video turned out too.

Going back to where it all first began; the Solitude Of Mind EP!
I figured it was about time I started remaking everything in my song catalog. The ON IMPULSE album just needs small tweaks and a simple remaster. However, everything that came before it is going to get the redux treatment (much like the treatment that Cyclic Divide recently received!). Its going to be fun recapturing the magic of 45+ of my own songs!
For the most part, Im going to stay very close to the originals, and try not to change them too much. Just making additions and modifications that sound cool... you know, its almost as if Im covering myself! DAR Covered By DAR!
As Ive come quite a long ways in the 9 years since I originally wrote and recorded this, I decided to spice up the leads! Throwing in a diving harmonic in the beginning for a stronger start and introduction. Then I also added those little runs (starting at 0:43) that both the leads and rhythm guitars play. Really enjoyed these, as I felt like it enhanced the energy of the track.
I also did some double-tapping, which wasnt used at all on the original. I even modified the melody a bit for the sake of variation, but also because the new bit has this certain feel about it. Really liked this small modification!
Something I found interesting was that I wound up going to my Strat for the leads. I used my Ibanez at first since Ive been so used to using it for nearly everything. However, when I compared the two, the Strat just had that little extra bit of magic to the sound. Not quite sure how to put it, other than it had that and was a bit more nuanced.
Overall pretty happy that the Strat is reprising its role on leads for these classic albums/releases!
I also got around to experimenting with saturation a bit more. Through a bit of research, I wound up finding out that when used right, saturation can actually help tame the high frequencies. I wound up throwing saturation plugins on the rhythm and leads. I think it wound up rounding and smoothing things off quite nicely!
Aside from falling back in love with my Strat, the only other things I changed up were a few minor things regarding the song structure. The rhythm guitar in the intro repeated itself for an extra loop before everything kicked in. I also extended the pause/rest at 0:23 to give the stereo delay more room to echo out (that and to give things more impact when everything comes back in).
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy this remake of a DAR Classic! Also hope you all look forward to joining my on this trip down memory lane. Its sure to be a treat for old-time listeners, as well as folks new to the channel! ~DAR

So this one was a bit of a novel request. Never had someone ask me to cover a song that they themselves had composed! So shoutout and thanks goes out to Icon, over at the Den of DAR!
While listening to the original MIDI, I really liked the feel of it. It almost reminds me a little bit of something from the Plutonia MIDI Pack.
I was originally going to try and follow the original MIDI instrumentation as close as possible. However, at some point along the way, I felt like throwing in some synths and electronic stuff.
I wound up changing the rhythm guitar part and doing my own little thing at 1:03. Also really enjoyed noodling around and creating the guitar solo towards the end! I actually got stuck for a little bit and debated whether or not to noodle further. Fortunately I broke through that brief block rather quickly!
Thinking about it now, I did also change the rhythm guitar part to play an octave lower. I still kept the original part underneath all that though. The original rhythm can be more clearly heard on the left side during 0:49.
I was also quite happy to use Biggus Kickus once again (most notably during the 0:49 section).

So just as the TNT Marathon back then had started with Sadistic, so too does this one! Of course, I think itll go without saying whats in store for us at the end of this marathon!
Its great getting to come back to a different interpretation of Sadistic, quite nostalgic really! Ive played and covered this one pretty straight, since there wasnt much room for me to go off script so to speak. I had a few small moments, but aside from those, I faithfully stuck to the original MIDI.

I havent forgotten about MAP21, Im just saving it for towards the end of the marathon.
That said, man it was great getting to riff around and stuff on the guitar after doing the past couple of synth-heavy covers!
This one was nice, short, and fun. Didnt want to extend it any since, I think it works great when looping.
I did manage to add in some new things though. Just my usual riffing around, and even a pick-scrape bit just for funsies. Also decided to add a harmony part towards the end, since I thought itd sound cool!
I also quite like how the sparkly bell parts turned out!

Oh man, Ive got a lot to type about for this one (good things of course)!
So first, merging of D64 gameplay finally makes its much long awaited return! More specifically, Ive got a mix of Doom64 Retribution, Doom64EX, and D64D2 going on. D64RTR for my flying camera shots that I love doing. D64EX for the actual D64 gameplay. Im really happy with how this whole thing turned out.
Now for audio. I think this might honestly be in my top favorites for this soundtrack. Theres just so much in here that tickles my fancy. Weve got the nice and brooding acoustic guitar melody that is very reminiscent of the original version of Legion of the Lost by Grave Digger. Except, things go a little further by faking a 12-string guitar, in order to give it that extra richness. In this case, just harmonizing an octave higher.
After slapping on some reverb and chorus on my acoustic tracks, it just sounds sooo good. This kind of tone and sound of the acoustic really reminds me of something, but I cant quite think of what. Regardless of what it tonally reminds me of, its always very satisfying when you manage to nail a tone that youre aiming for.
Also, I was very happy to finally figure out a better gain setting on my interface, as well as mic placement for recording my acoustic! I also had myself some fun with a free plugin by IgniteAmps called PTEq-X. Never found a good use for this thing in the past year and a half, but now Ive finally found it a home in my signal-chain for my acoustic!
Anyhow, I started hearing a shaker and tambourine in my head, as if they were calling to me. The tambs were simple enough, just the tambourines in my EZDrummer kit. However, I decided to get silly and artsy for the shaker. Going to my kitchen, I was going to try screwin around with some rice. I wound up taking a near empty bag of sprouting seeds that I had originally gotten a couple years ago, just to see how it would sound. To my surprise, it sounded perfect. So, I hooked up the mic, turned up the gain, and there I sat... shaking a near-empty bag of alfalfa seeds. The result? Sounds better than any shaker sample I have, sounds more organic too (hah, pun)! From now on, its my designated shaker bag.
In the original, it was only MIDI guitars, but as I listened to it, I could hear the choirs swelling and the string sections playing.
Doing this with the strings and choir helped give the lead guitars more impact when they finally kick in around 3:05. I did change up the guitars slightly, in order to make them a little more interesting. Very subtle additions to the rhythm and leads.
Speaking of rhythm, the final stretch of the song. The original didnt have those distorted guitars. When I listened to the original, I felt like I picked up on this implied energy in the song. It had the fast hi-hats and a steady thump of the bass drum. However, I felt like I needed to make it go further and beyond, to really tap into that energy. So I chugged away, threw in some toms and some subtle timpani to reinforce this cool galloping rhythm. During this bit (5:28), I totally imagined DoomGuy wielding some bigass chainsaw-sword, leading a warband of other UAC Marines, whilst riding a tamed pinky or something.
Oh, and the leads, I had so much fun getting to use my whammy bar a lot in this one! When the leads first show up, its my usual detuning downwards that I like doing. However, when it came to the DAR-original solo, I got to finally really use it for faster downtunes. I pretty much just bopped the thing while soloing around. Been wanting to try doing this for quite a while.
Something funny about this solo was that I didnt intend for this one to be the final version. It was getting late and I was going to call it a night, but I figured Okay, Ill just do a demo take so I dont forget the general idea. I couldve sworn that I goofed up at least 2 or 3 times while I was playing. Went to bed, and then loaded the solo into the project the next day. I was surprised that my in-the-moment playing actually worked out pretty well! That, and those perceived mistakes were all just in my head! But yeah, really loved how the leads turned out in this.
Lastly, I had a bit of a throwback/nod to Victory with the dirty guitar from 4:18-5:27.
