In 2023, our journey through the wonderful Indonesian Alor Archipelago began with an encounter with a friendly, loving, but very lonely dugong!
Erike and Ai, the amazing guides from AlorDreamTrip - alordreamtrip.com - told our team that a local fisherman once saved a then very young dugong. Thus, the man and the wild animal became friends. The name "dugong" comes from the Malay duyung, meaning "sea maiden" ("mermaid"). The mermaid was nicknamed "Mawar" - "Rose" in Indonesian. Rose never left this shore again and still swims to the sounds of a boat motor every time to say hello to her human friend. When Rose grew up, she began to miss the opposite sex very much, but her attachment to a man turned out to be stronger - Rose, disobeying her natural instincts, did not go in search of love adventures, but remained to live near the shore. Over time, the mermaid grew up, and everyone found out that Rose is actually a boy who, because of his tiny eyes, now takes every boat for a mermaid girlfriend and tries to hug her. Therefore, they forbid swimming with him - once, while playing, he hugged a tourist, thereby scaring her and everyone around. In any case, I managed to touch this amazing sea "merman" from a boat!
