I've been thinking about this for the past week since 1.3 came out and this is what I eventually came up with. This model is infinitely expandable and easy to make. Hope you like it!
Be aware, the sticky piston with the block is essential as carts have a tendency to phase through pistons when a block is not present and it occurs outside of the chunk.

A simple concept really, making a collection of furnaces into a key hole system. Using this concept you could effectively make a key system using a line of furnaces and the signal strength to determine the use of the output.
More a proof of concept than anything, could have made it much more complex, but figured simplicity was key.

They dont just detect redstone (above), but torches too
I am working on an adventure map (other than pirates) and there was a few things I needed, this being one of them. I started experimenting and came up with these. I have not seen anything smaller so I posted.

Yeah thats right, managed to compact it down to 6x6! A little bit of elbow grease and determination did the trick it seems :D
