The Dad Mobile is back with a vengeance! We bolt on one of the most transformative modifications to date - our very own STR38 turbo and take you on the journey of this upgrade. Yes, it is worth it!
Many VW Group cars are using the excellent EA888.3 Gen3 motor. These include cars from VW, Audi, Porsche, Skoda, Seat ... and perhaps even others. This robust powerplant came with a variety of OEM turbos based on power output (IS12, IS20, IS38). The IS38 variant was the most potent with its ability to run up to 400 wheel hp and an excellent match for the TSI 1.8 and 2.0 motors.
The OEM IS38 however has some inherent reliability issues that have earned it a mixed reputation in terms of reliability. These are a weaker bearings system and a teflon compressor housing insert that - should the wheel ever graze the housing - will stop the turbo from spinning and cause the shaft to break.
