A study released in July of 2017 by Science Advances, the journal of the AAAS tallied up all the plastic ever made. The scope and scale of its findings were extraordinary, including the tally that as of 2015, humans have made 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic. Only about 9% of the plastic ever made was recycled; the remainder has been buried, burned, or scattered across our lands and oceans.
