When i was younger I loved to drive out to less developed areas of land to take in the scenery. Nothing compares to seeing a stretch of land and sky at just the right angle revealed with just the right light. When you find a scene like that, it generates an unnamed feeling. Although I don’t take many pleasure drives anymore, I am still slightly obsessed with that feeling of seeing a perfect landscape arrangement.
In my songwriting I had a stretch of several songs where I attempted to express that feeling in music. All the Fences in Idaho is one of them. It’s not the best song you’ll ever hear, nor the most interesting. But it is designed to make you say, “Ahhhh.” I hope it brings you some pleasure as you listen -- and perhaps even something of the sense i am trying to convert with my landscape obsession.

I wrote this song on Christmas Day last year. It is certainly not a Christmas song in any obvious way, but I used the feeling of the day to help guide the song. I can hear gentleness, love, optimism, thankfulness, peace, and a little bit of magic in the song. Put this way, that does have the ring of Christmas Day.

We are at war with ourselves. Not between us. Within us. We fight possible versions of what we do and therefore who we become.
Thats not an original suggestion. Thats not a surprising suggestion. Many investigators of human nature reach this conclusion, with some claiming that this is the central characteristic of our condition.
The struggle between what we do and what we are inclined to do is one that everyone will recognize. We know how easily we could be something other than what we are.
With that in mind, Space at the Seams plays on the tension within ourselves our conflict between our various selves. The face that we present to others is not merely a role. We actually believe it to be who we are, even when we are aware that the face has competitors inside, away from the view of others. Those competitors, too, we believe to be who we are, and we are forced to act against them.
Those other selves may be our darker wishes. They may champion our moral intentions. They may connect us to something beyond time. They may be mere simulated possible routes for actions.
Watch anyone closely, including yourself, and you will notice the tiny cracks in the veneer. You will notice wrinkles on the surface small fluctuations in the presentation that suggest a disconnect between what is said and what is felt. You will notice inner selves trying to emerge into a more prominent position to be seen by others and have control. Spaces at the seams is where these elements try to escape.
