In this video, Matthew King plays all three of Erik Satie’s Gymnopédies. Composed in 1888, with a mysterious title that evokes naked dances of ancient Greece, Satie reimagined musical form, rhythm and harmony in these 3 extraordinary pieces, composed as if viewing the same musical object from three angles. Each piece seems like an extension of the one before: expressive yet austere, ambiguous in terms of harmony, each like a Valse-Triste, but shorn of any hint of Romanticism. Satie's imaginary archaism points quietly but courageously towards modernity.
