A coalition of powerful and very conservative Christians has been empowered by the election of President Trump, and we can see their agenda being put into action:
- Threats to repeal the Johnson Amendment
- A Education secretary that wants to funnel public tax dollars to religious schools
- An immigration ban that disproportionately targets Muslims, violating the Establishment Clause
- An uptick in State Religious Freedom Restoration Acts and other legislation that allows people to use their interpretation of “religious freedom” to undermine others' civil rights
Aside from the legal and legislative battles, secular people will face many ideological ones. A choice many of us will have to make is how we choose to build the coalitions that will successfully challenge the bigoted and exclusionary policies and practices of the Trump/Pence Administration. These threats to church-state separation and civil liberties call for more intersectional coalition work all-around, including coalitions of those who believe and do not.
