*Open For Bidding* Kermit Oliver’s very rare Chefs Indiens is being offered for auction as part of a private, single-owner Hermès collection. It also has a very historical story behind it, which is right up my alley. These portraits are from the three volumes of McKenney and Hall’s History of the Indian Tribes of North America, which are part of the Émile Hermès collection. In 1821, Thomas McKenney, then Washington’s Superintendent of Indian Affairs, welcomed the First Nation leaders to the capital. During their visit, they met with President James Monroe, and artist Charles Bird King invited each to have their portrait painted. These portraits later inspired the lithographs published in McKenney and Hall’s books many years later. Here’s when Kermit Oliver enters the story. He replicated many of the portraits to be represented on Chefs Indiens and the final scarf was released in 2014.
