2014 June 28-29, Sault Ste Marie to Hearst, Ontario
A few highlights from the CN-operated passenger train between Sault Ste Marie ON and Hearst ON. I wanted to ride this train while it was still running because there was threat it might shut down. Indeed a year later it was suddenly canceled, although as of early 2016 there are plans to resume it under a new operator.
The train passes through the Agawa Canyon from Sault Ste Marie, and then continues through the wilderness past countless lakes to reach Hearst. The day I went there was a slow order over much of the track due to heat kinks in recently-replaced rails. We ended up about an hour short of Hearst when the crew hit their work time limit, had to take a taxi into town. Which meant coming south the next day the crew ran out of work hours about 4 hours away from Sault Ste Marie and had to be replaced by a fresh crew taxi'd in from Sault Ste Marie (at Frater, if I recall correctly).
CN 104 - EMD F40PHR (Agawa Canyon Tour Train paint scheme).
also seen in Hearst:
ONR 2200 - EMD GP40-2
ONR 1801 - EMD GP38-2
CN 2170 - GE Dash 8-40CW
