The three greatest poets in the time of Islam were three: Al-Farazqad, Jarir and Al-Akhtal. They were incredible poets but they hated each other. Learn more about their poetic wars.
Al-Farazdaq:
إِنَّ الَّذي سَمَكَ السَماءَ بَنى لَنا *** بَيتاً دَعائِمُهُ أَعَزُّ وَأَطوَلُ
The one who has raised the heavens has built for a house,
Whose pillars are glorious and tall
بَيتاً بَناهُ لَنا المَليكُ وَما بَنى *** حَكَمُ السَماءُ فَإِنَّهُ لا يُنقَلُ
A house built for us by the King, and what
The Ruler of the Sky has built cannot be shaken.
حُلل الملوك لباسنا في أهلنا *** والسابغاتِ إلى الوغى نتسربل
We wear the cloaks of kings inside our homes,
And (outside) we wear the cloaks of armour
أَحلامنا تَزِنُ الجِبَالَ رزَانَةً *** وَتَخَالُنَا جِنَّا إذا ما نَجهَلُ
Our might resembles the mountains in their glory
And we resemble the Jinn, when we transgress
فادفعْ بكفكَ إن أردت بنَاءنَا *** ثَهْلانَ ذا الهَضَبَاتِ هَل يتَحَلحَلُ
If you seek to destroy our building, then push with your palm,
Against Thahlan the great mount, and see if it moves.
إنا لنضربُ رأس كلِ قبيلةٍ *** وأبوك خلف أتانه يتقملُ
We strike down the heads of the chiefs of each tribe,
While your fathers (O’ Jarir) sits on his donkey, picking lice (from his hair).
Jarir Replied:
أَخزى الَّذي سَمَكَ السَماءَ مُجاشِعاً *** وَبَنى بِناءَكَ في الحَضيضِ الأَسفَلِ
The one who raised the sky has humiliated (the tribe of Mujashi’),
And built your building at the bottom (of the mountain)
بَيتاً يُحَمِّمُ قَينُكُم بِفَنائِهِ *** دَنِساً مَقاعِدُهُ خَبيثَ المَدخَلِ
At the courtyard of your house is an iron-smith working,
From whom the dirt spreads to the rest of the house.
إِنَّ الَّذي سَمَكَ السَماءَ بَنى لَنا *** بَيتاً عَلاكَ فَما لَهُ مِن مَنقَلِ
The one who raised the heavens has built for us,
A house higher than yours, so it can't be moved
أَبلِغ بَني وَقبانَ أَنَّ حُلومَهُم *** خَفَّت فَما يَزِنونَ حَبَّةَ خَردَلِ
Inform Bani Kabban that their might is so insignificant that it equals a grain of mustard.
