One of the greatest rookie seasons ever. Only Teemu Selanne (76) and Mike Bossy (53) scored more in their first year. From a 2-goal debut to the highlight-filled month of January that included what many consider the greatest goal in NHL history, simply known as "The Goal", Alex Ovechkin has a storybook first season. While the Capitals finished 14th in the Eastern Conference, Ovechkin was finding himself near the top of the statistical categories. Finishing 3rd overall in both goals and points, as well as leading all rookies in both categories, helping him beat out Sidney Crosby and Dion Phaneuf for the 2006 Calder Trophy. His 106 points are the most by a rookie since Teemu Selanne recorded 132 in 1992-93. His 52 goals are the most since Selanne scored 76 that same year, and is only one less than Mike Bossy's 53 in 1977-78, which ranks second all-time. Both totals rank third all-time among rookies.
