In a rare, unscripted moment at Paragon 2025 in New York, Palantir CEO Alex Karp explained the single most radical decision that turned Palantir from a post-9/11 intelligence tool into one of the fastest-growing software companies on the planet.
It all started with a promise to the U.S. government: the FBI, the CIA, and later U.S. Special Operations Command. Karp and the early team made a deliberate choice most startups would call insane: they would absorb all the risk, build products that actually work in war zones, and only get paid downstream of real value created, never upfront lock-in contracts or steak-dinner sales tactics. That “germ of an idea,” as Karp calls it, birthed Palantir Gotham, Project Maven (which changed modern battlefields), and the security model that years later became the foundation for Ontology and AIP.
When Palantir finally went commercial, they brought the exact same non-parasitic philosophy: no forced lock-in, no commoditization of your business, no stealing your revenue multiple. Instead, Foundry, Ontology, and AIP are built so your company becomes the best, most specific version of itself, and Palantir only wins when you win bigger. Wall Street analysts hated it. Bankers refused to underwrite the company. Karp jokes that even today he can’t get a single banker to take a meeting.
Yet here we are, Palantir is one of the only software companies consistently growing triple digits in its commercial segment while still powering America’s most critical missions. As Karp put it: “We thought the soldiers risking their lives were more important than we were… and that culture eats everything for breakfast.”
