John Cardt, a teacher at a college in England, finds himself captured by dark magicians in another world together with a group of his colleagues. He finds himself having very vivid dreams of one of his previous students, Sandra Roberts, and one day wakes up to see a large army outside their prison. He and the other teachers listen to the battle outside, to frightened to do anything else, when nine humans suddenly appear in their cell. Eight of them use magic to get the teachers out of the cell while the ninth (Sandra) fights off the dark magicians. When the teachers arrive in a tent back in the army's camp they are all exhausted and fall asleep.
When waking up, John meets Sandra again and finds out that she is not a regular human but the Queen of Valinor and a magician. As he walks through the camp he meets Alexandra (Alex) Roberts Kenobi, one of Sandra's youngest daughters, and befriends her. They stick together during the time in the camp until the teachers are sent back to England.
When back, John finds himself thinking of Alex right before the doorbell rings. Outside stands Alex, who reveals, while crying, that Sandra has been killed. John invites her to stay with him for a while and soon realises that Alex is trying to avoid the subject of her mother's death. After three days John tries to force her to face her grief and the two of them fight. During the argument Alex lashes out and reveals that she was the one who grabbed and pulled him out of the cell and that she fell in love with him already back then. John is briefly stunned but then pulls her into a kiss. They spend the night together.
When they wake up, John begins to realise that Sandra's death might be fake. Together he and Alex deduces that Sandra has actually been sent on the Quest to become a Guardian and John sets out on a journey around the world to find his friend and bring her back to Valinor, as the magical realm is in terrible danger without its Queen.
