Ålesund is famous for its distinctive Art Nouveau architecture, a result of a fire in 1904 that destroyed the former wooden city. With the aid of German funds and young Norwegian designers, the city was rebuilt, resulting in a cityscape more akin to Prague and Brussels than to Oslo or Bergen.

The city is a picturesque municipality located in Møre og Romsdal County, Norway. It’s part of the traditional district of Sunnmøre and serves as the center of the Ålesund Region. The city is uniquely situated on several islands, including Nørvøya, Aspøya, Heissa (Hessa), and Oksnøya, all interconnected by bridges.

Ålesund is delicately balanced on a collection of islands of various shapes and sizes, offering stunning views from almost anywhere in the town. The surrounding area is characterized by fjords, mountain chains, and island chains.
