Here's video fully focused on a M-346 Master from the Italian RSV (Reparto Sperimentale Volo - Flight Experimental Unit) which I managed to record in action twice within two weeks: during the 2024 Airpower air show in Austria and during the 2024 Jesolo Air Show last weekend.

The M-346 is an advanced transonic trainer conceived as a platform for flight training on new-generation fighters, produced by the Italian company Alenia Aermacchi (Leonardo Aircraft to date). The first prototype of this little jet trainer, which can also be used as a light fighter jet, took off for its maiden flight in 2004 but the actual project was launched in 1993 as an Italian-Russian cooperation between the manufacturers Aermacchi and Yakovlev, which was called Yak/AEM-130. The first test flight was in 1996, but the cooperation ended in 2000 and both companies began to develop their own aircraft.

The M-346 has been in series production since 2010 and is a very advanced evolution of the original Yak/AEM-130 design. Avionics is based on the Eurofighter, Dassault Rafale, and other Western fighter aircraft currently in production. The flight performance of the M-346 is significantly improved over training aircraft from previous generations, actually approaching that of 4th and 5th generation excluding afterburner use. In fact the Master is powered by two Honeywell F124-GA-200 turbofan engine with a maximum thrust of 27.80 kN for each engine. It's controlled via a four-channel fly-by-wire system and features an automatic return to horizontal flight system called the Pilot Activated Recovery System (PARS) that the pilot can activate in the event of loss of control or disorientation.

The M-346 is designated as T-346 by the Italian Air Force but the actual combat aircraft version gets the letter 'F' at the end of the name:
- M-346FT (Fighter Trainer), multi-role version convertible from trainer to combat aircraft
- M-346FA (Fighter Attack), a version derived from the FT intended for close air support, ground attack, air policing and surveillance missions

Just a couple of days before this year's Jesolo Air Show, the M-346 Master has been announced as the new airplane of the Frecce Tricolori, the famous Italian aerobatic demonstration team, and which will be introduced in a few years in place of their current Aermacchi MB-339s.
