Island of Incarceration, Island of Freedom
Alcatraz Island, located in the San Francisco Bay, has a multifaceted past that weaves together stories of American incarceration, justice, and our shared humanity. Originally, Alcatraz served as a fortress guarding the entrance to San Francisco Bay.
In the late 1800s, it transformed into a military prison, housing soldiers and military convicts. From 1934 to 1963, Alcatraz operated as a maximum security federal penitentiary.
Infamous criminals like Al Capone and Robert Stroud (the “Birdman of Alcatraz”) were incarcerated here.
The island’s isolation, frigid waters, and treacherous currents made escape nearly impossible. In 1969, Indigenous activists occupied Alcatraz for 19 months. They demanded recognition of Native American civil rights and claimed the island in the name of freedom. This occupation left an indelible mark on Alcatraz’s history.
Perched in the middle of the San Francisco Bay, was designed to break even the most defiant criminals. Inmates faced brutal conditions, including the dreaded “strip cell”—a desolate chamber stripped of hope, light, and humanity.
Some spirits, unable to move on, linger within these grim confines.
