AlboPepper - Drought Proof Urban Gardening | Albo-Spindle: Turn Blu-ray / DVD / CD Cake Boxes into Self-watering SIP Planters @Albopepper | Uploaded May 2015 | Updated October 2024, 7 hours ago.
I recently transplanted a pepper seedling into this cool sub-irrigated mini garden planter. This is a self-watering system made from recycled or re-purposed CD or DVD containers. The bottom spindle serves as a water reservoir, reducing the frequency of watering. Some form of cord is used to provide the wicking action. The top container which holds the potting mix is a 100 count CD / DVD spindle. If you use a 100 count cake box (as shown in the video) you can actually fit 8 cups of soil / mix!
I think this thing is great for growing venus fly traps. Of course, you can grow lots of other things like herbs, seedlings or small vegetables.
