Tom Willock is a true Alberta original.
He's celebrated here in his home province and across the photography world. He is renowned for his highly distinctive photographic style and vast work depicting the Rocky Mountains' wonder, grandeur and beauty.
Throughout a photography career that began in the 1960s, Tom has devoted his creative energy to conveying his Southwestern Alberta home's natural spirit and majesty. He's also a passionate believer in the artistic community surrounding him; this year, he and his wife, Susan Sax-Willock, celebrate 25 years of running their art gallery.
The Willock & Sax Gallery began in Waterton Lakes National Park in 1998, later relocating to Banff National Park, where it's now a mainstay of Banff's Bear Street art hub.
An exploration and celebration of Tom's photography takes place just down the road at the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies. A Celebration of Tom Willock is just underway, running through January 21, 2024. The exhibition is an opportunity to celebrate this remarkable artist in the place that is both his home and his source of endless artistic inspiration. It's also a chance to hear about the stories behind these striking photographs, which would sometimes require Tom to spend days backpacking through the wild so that he could capture a single distilled moment in time.
