A story that was sparked in part by the author's losing a close family member, The Probability of Everything is a book about facing a potentially world-ending rogue asteroid - and yes, it's a kids' book! Acclaimed Edmonton-based author Sarah Everett published her latest book in June via HarperCollins Canada; this month, it was named the winner of the Governor General's Literary Award for Young People's Literature - Text.
The story follows 11-year-old Kemi Carter, a kid with a scientific bent who must grapple with the sudden appearance of Amplus-68, an asteroid which is reckoned to have an 87.4% chance of ending all life on Earth within the next four days. While this development rocks the very foundations of Kemi's life, it also causes her to re-evaluate what's important to her, what it means to leave something behind and how we say goodbye when we must part from our loved ones. Sarah's riveting book was partly inspired by the loss of her uncle, which led her to explore the complex feelings surrounding loss and grief. The resulting book offers young readers both a page-turner and a powerful resource for understanding bigger life questions.
