Yesterday we had a very long day of travel, departing from New Hampshire at 3am in the morning and arriving in Anchorage, Alaska around 2pm Local.
Today, after a night’s rest at the Pioneer Ridge Bed and Breakfast in Wasilla, Alaska, which we’ve been staying at each year for the last nine years visiting Alaska, we drove up to Hatchers Pass and the Independence Mine historic state park.
Hatchers Pass and the Independence Mine are located in the Talkeetna Mountains, about 30 minutes north of downtown Palmer, Alaska.
On our way, we stopped to take a look at the Little Susitna River, before continuing on up to the entrance to the state park. The turquois water was flowing quite strong and was glacier cold.
At the mine we walked the mile loop around the Independence mine and toured the buildings that were open to the public.
The history about the mine, and the men who worked it, pre-world war II was fascinating. The start of World War II pretty much ended the operations of the mine, as the production of Gold was not needed, but the men that worked the mine were.
