Akeel Bilgrami looks at the origins of support for Brexit in the UK, anti-elitism, and populism and nationalism, and challenges faced by other countries – such as Brazil.
He focuses on how capitalism has developed globally over the past three decades, and the need for ordinary people’s interests to be protected locally and internationally in the increasingly globalised economy.
He identifies authoritarian and fascist tendencies that have emerged in this new globalised world economy, and urges for more work to be done to understand the origins of this and possible responses to it that would deliver a more equitable environment for ordinary people.
