What is Akakor - a real lost city hidden in the Amazon, or one of the most dangerous archaeological hoaxes of the 20th century?
The story of the legendary city of Akakor begins with a German journalist, a mysterious “Indian chief,” a secret civilization in the jungle, and tales of underground cities, ancient gods, and German soldiers.
But gradually, the legend turns into a real criminal mystery: people who set out to find Akakor begin to disappear.
In 1972, German journalist Karl Brugger meets a man in Manaus who introduces himself as Tatunca Nara — the chief of an unknown people called the Ugha Mongulala.
Tatunca tells him about the ancient city of Akakor, hidden somewhere deep in the Brazilian Amazon, along with underground tunnels, lost civilizations, and “gods” who once left Earth.
Brugger decides to investigate the story for himself.
But his expedition ends without a single photograph, coordinate, or piece of archaeological evidence.
Even so, in 1976 Brugger publishes The Chronicle of Akakor (Die Chronik von Akakor) — a book that transforms an obscure legend into an international sensation.
And the story only becomes more unbelievable.
According to Tatunca Nara, ancient underground cities existed beneath the Amazon. The gods — known as the “Former Masters” — had once left Earth. A sister city of Akakor was supposedly hidden behind a waterfall in the Parima Mountains. And during World War II, as many as 2,000 German soldiers allegedly reached Akakor by submarine and joined its people.
No independent evidence has ever been found to support these claims.
But after the book was published, some readers decided to search for the city themselves.
