A listening watch is vital for the safe conduct of your flight. 🛫
Key Points to Remember:
Actively listen to all transmissions.
Use the information gained to build your situational awareness and to assist in seeing and avoiding other aircraft.
Always listen to transmissions such as the ATIS in full to confirm the airspace status.
For example, if the tower is not active, the ATIS will be information ZULU and will include the time of activation and the CTAF frequency. Even if the tower is closed during usual operational hours, the Terminal Control Unit, or TCU, might still operate and 'Information ZULU' will continue to broadcast as both the Tower and Approach can operate independently of each other.
By listening to the entire ATIS, reading the relevant NOTAMs, and checking ERSA for published hours, you can ensure you have all the operational information you need.
