The evolution of modern aerospace doctrine is inextricably linked to the fiery career and uncompromising vision of Brigadier General William Billy Mitchell. In the years following the First World War, conventional military thinking remained firmly tied to the doctrine of surface power, viewing battleships as the supreme arbiters of national defense and treating aircraft as mere reconnaissance auxiliaries. Billy Mitchell, having commanded the largest air armada of the Great War during the Saint-Mihiel offensive with over 1,400 aircraft, recognized that three-dimensional warfare had rendered traditional defense strategies obsolete.

Determined to prove that land-based aviation could defeat naval armor, Mitchell orchestrated Project B off the Virginia coast in the summer of 1921. Flying from Langley Field, his air crews targeted captured German vessels, systematically sinking the submarine U-117, the destroyer G102, and the armored cruiser Frankfurt. The ultimate trial took place against the SMS Ostfriesland, a veteran dreadnought of the Battle of Jutland widely considered unsinkable. Utilizing 2,000-pound demolition bombs dropped in close proximity to produce catastrophic hydraulic water-hammer shockwaves against the hull, Mitchell’s aviators sent the massive warship to the bottom in minutes, fundamentally shaking the naval high command.

This comprehensive documentary chronicles Mitchell’s meteoric rise, his bitter clashes with the War Department and the Coolidge administration, and the tragic 1925 crash of the dirigible USS Shenandoah that prompted his public accusations of criminal negligence against military leadership. The resulting court-martial became one of the most famous trials in American history, during which Mitchell accurately predicted transoceanic military flights, supersonic aviation, paratrooper assaults, and the December 7th surprise attack by Japan on Pearl Harbor.

Concluding this historical retrospective is an exhaustive technical orientation for the North American B-25 Mitchell medium bomber, named in the general's honor. Explore authentic cockpit checklists, pre-flight walkarounds, Wright R-2600 radial engine ignition procedures, short-field obstacle clearance techniques, cruise management profiles, and emergency single-engine flight dynamics. Through restored and colorized archival footage, witness the birth of modern air doctrine and the operational realities of one of World War II’s most versatile combat aircraft.
