Air’s first track is all about two schoolfriends. The
Source label is one of the first to show an interest in the Parisian electronic scene and they launch a compilation
called Sourcelab. Marc Tessier du Cros is working for them at the time and he urges his friend Nicolas Gaudin to
hand in a demo: Modular Mix. It’s a great track and Marc decides to ask me to produce it. With Pierre-Michel
Levallois, we rent a good reverb and a small mixing desk and set up shop in his parents’ attic to mix the track. I
simplify the structure and add a lot of reverb, and then we master the track with Alex Gopher. After that, Jean-
Benoît Dunckel teams up with Nicolas to make Air a duo. Everyone mentioned here was playing table football in
the café opposite our high school just four years earlier !
