My review of the Air King 9212 "Industrial Grade Floor Fan".
I have a lot of mixed feelings about this unit. There's a lot to like about it, but the hefty retail price also leaves a lot of questions unanswered.
I particularly like the aesthetics of the unit, it looks much older than it is. It feels solid and sits sturdy on the base. It's adjustable to any angle you want. It moves air well in situations where a wide, gentle breeze is favored over a concentrated, forceful stream (for instance, it will cool multiple people sitting near each other on a couch, but it's very ineffective for pushing air down a hallway to circulate air conditioning). The noise level is reasonable and the sound it makes is pleasant. The motor is ball bearing which is generally superior to sleeve bearings, and the motor is totally enclosed to prevent dust accumulation inside. Cord is very long at 9'.
As of the time of this taping, this unit retails in the range of approximately $110 to $150. This is a very steep price for a far-from-perfect unit. These units are notoriously littered with QC issues such as out of balance blades, and with this one, a ring of the guard not welded in place. The way the guard goes together and attaches to the stand is absolutely ridiculous and very difficult to work with for cleaning. The motor also leaves a lot to be desired, internally it looks to be more or less the same as the rest of the fans Lasko makes today, certainly a far cry from "industrial grade". My opinions on the performance of this unit have definitely increased favorably after this testing, but I'm still left with very mixed feelings overall. There's a lot to like about this unit, but it's also very pricey for it's flaws. At the triple digit price, I don't think it's a good value. There's other fans you can get that also have ball bearings for half the price of this or less.
