A team of engineering physics students at the University of British Columbia has achieved something remarkable in robotics and artificial intelligence. Instead of spending months training a robot on a physical air hockey table, they taught it entirely inside a computer simulation. After training was complete, the AI-controlled robot moved directly to the real world and started competing against human opponents without additional adjustments.
This project combines reinforcement learning, computer vision, neural networks, high-speed tracking, custom simulation software, and precision robotics. The robot uses a camera running at 120 FPS, a Core XY gantry system, advanced control algorithms, and a simulation capable of running hundreds of times faster than real life. Discover how the team solved the difficult "simulation-to-reality" challenge and created one of the most impressive student robotics projects in recent years.
